Endemic marketing refers to marketing and advertising that feels intrinsically natural and fitting to the market it targets. In it, the ads are strategically placed so that they culturally belong to the consumer group they are speaking to and contingently belong to the spaces they’re placed in — for instance, a cosmetics brand advertising a new lipstick through makeup influencers on TikTok.
Unlike demographic marketing, which may broadly categorize consumers, endemic marketing teases out the interests, passions, likes, and dislikes of a consumer. Because of this, endemic marketing can elevate DEI marketing, as the approach calls on brands to get granular about the cultural nuances and broader relevance of their products and campaigns. It invites brands to prioritize spaces and channels that truly resonate with their audiences, which may include platforms by and for specific communities. This amplifies the visibility of diverse voices at many levels of a campaign. Getting at the intricacies of a consumer’s cultural context is the core of the campaign, not just an afterthought.
