What to know

Transitional housing is temporary housing, particularly associated and designed for very low-income and/or houseless individuals or families, sometimes referred to as low-income or subsidized housing. The Continuum of Care Program, under the Department of Housing and Urban Development, is designed to help people experiencing houselessness and homelessness move into temporary or permanent housing with the long-term goal of stability. Organizations such as nonprofits or religious organizations also often lead the charge of finding people transitional housing. Transitional housing programs also can include wraparound support services, including individual case management and mental health services. Using specific terminology, such as noting the CoC program, is helpful for clarity.
